About the music
Gabriel Fauré, Requiem in D minor, Op. 48
- Written between 1887 and 1890, revised through the 1890s and completed in 1900.
- First heard on 16 January 1888 at La Madeleine in Paris, at a funeral; the full orchestral version was first played at the Trocadéro during the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
- Fauré left out the fearsome Dies irae, keeping only its Pie Jesu, and ended with In Paradisum, a text from the burial rite.
- He described it as expressing “a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest”. Seven movements, about 35 minutes.
